Learning to Make Germinators

Today Pauliano came to teach us (clockwise from the front are Jaydine, Geraldo and Sharifa) how to make germinators for the seeds.  He says it would be good to start the plants in the garden as small plants rather than as seeds.  Pauliano says 2 liter plastic coke bottles are the best size and shape, and we need two tops for every bottom.
He cut two bottles in half and the top of one is inverted in the bottom of the bottle and the soil and seeds go in there.  The top of a second one makes the cover and with a few holes punched in it will allow a seal with the bottom.  This will allow condensation to form and the seeds will stay moist.
The dogs wanted to join in.  They are Terry (black and white) and Tessie and live with Geraldo and Jaydine.  Terry is the local Casanova- all the puppies are his it seems (four sets from May to October).

Given the amount of trash I have seen I thought that would be easy to find coke bottles, but it is apparently more difficult than it seems to find the exact right size and shape. The children collected a couple (I told them we need a lot but we will get there).

The children of course wanted to immediately make more, but we didn’t have enough bottles.  And they wanted to be the ones to use the cutter and the nail to punch the holes.  Get out the bandaids!  Pauliano was careful to tell them they could only do this project under Pastor’s supervision and that the plastic bottles become sharp when cut in half.
