May 17, 2013, Friday
I started the day in chapel. The students did a news program, reviewing the local, national and international news and weather. This tradition started during Apartheid when the news was censored but continues to give the students the opportunity to do a news program for their peers. We also saw the pictures from the matric dance- quite a popular presentation.
Rev. Scott does a history presentation on Fridays and on this occasion it was on the chapel and the woman it is named for who was an American Board of Mission (Congregational predecessor before the UCC and then Global Ministries were formed) missionary. She was the principal of the school for 30 years and retired to Pilgrim Place in Claremont. Lavinia ??? I forgot her name- "Shame!" (That is a South African term used in many circumstances and it fits well here)
Rev. Susan in her Life skills class. The students are in groups of 5 and each group is studying one disease (obesity, diabetes, HIV/Aids, TB, and heart disease.)
Each student in the group has a question to research and answer about the disease, then the group will put together a presentation for the whole class so that all the students take turns learning and teaching each other.
Lunch time in the dining room.
The seminary hosts a bloodmobile and many students sign up to give blood. The current principal is the woman on the right with the gray scarf.
