Trip to Durban Day 4- Part 2

May 15, 2013, Thursday
Following chapel I had the opportunity to go with 12 of the matric students and one of the teachers to a service activity that Rev. Susan has coordinated.  On the day that assistance checks are distributed they go to nearby village senior center where people gather for their checks.  They wait for a long time (3 hours) so having a snack and hospitality seems like a good ministry.

We loaded up the school trailer with juice, oranges, apples, bananas, muffins and cups.

And off we went!

The students/members took the chance to pose!

We arrived and the students unloaded the supplies into the dining room.

While I went to start greeting the seniors.

They were happy to have pictures taken.

And happy to be greeted in the senior center.

The lady on the left told me that her oldest granddaughter graduated from Inanda Seminary and is now a nurse.  Her youngest granddaughter will start next year!

The students gathered all the supplies and started cutting up fruit and pouring juice in the dining room of the elder home.

This gentleman watched in the dining room.  He is a resident of the elder home in the village.

More seniors who wanted their picture taken.

Then the youth served the healthy snacks to the seniors.

The gentleman on the right told me he had never had snacks and greetings before and he would remember it forever.

After waiting in the chairs in side, a coordinator has a row at a time get in line (que up) out side so they don't have to stand in line a long time.

There is a trailer with a machine that issues the checks.

The residents of the elder home as well as the home for disabled adults get in line at the end so they don't have to wait.

The teacher and students made sure no one missed getting a snack.

Then the students went to the residences of the elders and disable adults to greet and bring snacks.

Then we packed up to go back to the seminary.

The security guard vehicle that accompanies the check trailer.  The guards were nice but did not want their picture taken.

On the way back to the seminary here are the signs!

The Inanda Seminary road with historical banners.

The front gate of the seminary.

Unpacking the trailer.

The students washing the cups and trays.

The teacher encouraging them to hurry up so they could get to class...sure!

Everything needed to be cleaned up so the kitchen crew wasn't burdened by the project!

The students made it back to class and they leave their backpacks outside, taking in only what they need.  This is the library building and the classroom used for life skills and english.
Science classroom building.

On Thursday evening, Micah came home for a weekend break from boarding school.  A housemaster/teacher/rugby coach Paul brought him and stayed for dinner. (in blue on left)  Micah has his back to the camera, Maddie is smiling in the center and Scott is toasting a family time in the kitchen while Susan is cooking up a delicious storm as usual.

"No matter where I serve my guests, it seems the like the kitchen best!"

Susan cooked but Maddie arranged the beautiful feast on the table.  Susan made fajitas in my honor and they were the best Mexican food in South Africa! (and anywhere else!)

And it was all eaten in a freshly painted dining room with good food, great friends and a warm and welcoming family.  Thank you so much!!
