Trip to Durban Day 3

May 15, 2013 Wednesday
Wednesday began with a walk on the board walk of the beach in Durban.
This is the stadium built for the world cup with a arch on top that you can either 1) ride a car to the top of or 2) bungee jump off of- I passed on both!

The boardwalk is new and a renovation/renaissance for the city.  There are several dune restoration projects with good signage requesting people not to disturb it and explaining that the dunes not only are beautiful, encourage wildlife to return, and keep the beaches from eroding, but also keep the sand from blowing around.

I stayed with Global Ministries missionaries the Rev. Dr. Scott Couper and the Rev. Susan Valliquette and their children.  Their son Micah (14), in abstentia shared his room with me.  He was off at boarding school.  When he came home on the weekend Maddie (11) shared her room with me and I forgot to take a picture.  (I am failing as a photojournalist this trip I realize)

The family lives on campus of the Inanda Seminary-a boarding school for high school girls who are Zulu speaking, established 144 years ago by missionaries when the girls would not have had access to formal schooling.  Now it is full high school with excellent education- 100% scores on marks last year! This is the back of the chapel named for a missionary who retired to Pilgrim Place in Claremont!  I encourage you to check out their website. http://inanda.org/

Students (referred to as members) gathering for class.

Inside the museum/archives building.  I spent hours here reading the history of the school and missions in the area.  Scott is the Development Director and in charge of the archives and it is a very fascinating and informative display.

A look across campus.

Stained glass over the doors of the chapel.

An unfortunately dark picture of the altar and stained glass over it.

The drive in the center of campus looking toward the original home of the missionaries- the oldest building on campus and now used to house the school's central office and office of the principal.

Lindley Hall the building where the archives and museum are located.
